With a lot of businesses and non-profits moving into the S. Lake Union neighborhood, you might get some notice (esp. around happy hour). However, at least right now, people don't hang out in S. Lake Union and they definitely don't hang out near the Whole Foods on Denny. With all of the restaurants and bars in the neighborhood, Ballard is by far your best bet. Plus, people actually live in Ballard and there's a thriving food/restaurant culture there (esp. with things like the Ballard Farmer's Market (open all year round) and new restaurants coming in on Ballard Ave.). That's just my $.02.
